Wedding Guest Dresses

The arrival of Spring marks the arrival of another big season; wedding season. Luckily almost all of my friends are married already so my calendar isn’t packed with showers, brunches, or weddings this year. However I still find myself needing dresses throughout the season. I have a few go-to styles for each type of event I’m going to. My first shopping stop is always Banana Republic. The majority of my work wardrobe is from Banana so why shouldn’t everything else be? I love that so many of their pieces work for a lot of different purposes for me.

Sheath Dresses

Sheath dresses are a pretty standard staple in my closet. I try to find styles and patterns I can wear for events or for work. I also love the shape a sheath dress gives. I tend to wear these to more formal showers, brunches, or cocktail parties. I don’t like to keep anything in my closet that I can’t wear for at least a few different purposes. My favorite option is this blue floral sheath that I’m wearing here. The fabric is really lightweight which will be perfect to last through Summer when it’s hot and humid in St. Louis. I also love this blue dress with an unexpected bow. I would definitely wear this for baby showers, wedding showers, or brunches. I always love a pop of floral and some color (you know I get stuck on blush, cream, and black) and this dress is perfect for everything including some sandals for a casual look.

Fit & Flare

I love a fit and flare dress, it’s basically the backbone of wedding guest dresses. I think fit and flares are the quintessential party dress. I mean how can you not take a twirl with a big skirt? Making this work for lots of functions is easy as long as you stay simple in the dress. I avoid styles that are decidedly too formal or too young. I try to pick something classic and easy to dress up with the right accessories. A great option is this lace dress that leaves plenty of room for a fabulous shoe or gorgeous bag. Another option is to go midi fit and flare. I try to stay above the knee, but this floral midi is calling to me. Like the sheath dress, a fit and flare is super easy to pair with a jacket or cardigan if you want to cover up your shoulders or have been personally victimized by every air conditioner within 3 miles.

Maxi

Maxi dresses have recently become a big staple in my closet. I never used to wear them and the past couple of years I’ve really embraced the maxi life. I love them as a more formal option as well. I feel like maxi dresses are one of the easiest styles to dress up or down. Going to a wedding? Get out your heels, grab a clutch, and put on a statement necklace or earrings. Running out to grab brunch? Just throw on some sandals and a straw bag and you’re done. I am absolutely in love with this one shoulder maxi. It’s perfect for any shower, wedding, or just dining al fresco with your guy. For something a little more romantic, this blue layered dress is great for an outdoor wedding or any shower.
